Are you using one of the new cw&p sets from Guest Gear Services? If so, it should come with specs for setup - basically the distance from the pinion face to the centre line of the cw bearings - and the backlash. You'll need to set up a mandrel between the cw bearings and make up a gauging piece. A dial gauge is necessary for the backlash. The pinion is carried between two roller bearings for the radial loads, sandwiched between them is a two directional ball thrust bearing for the axial loads. It's essential to use a 'locator' bearing, i.e. one with a reduced outer diameter, in this application. Preload on the cw bearings is set by shims in the housings and backlash by moving shims from one side to the other after preload has been set. The Speed 25 axle is similar in design to other Alvis axles and good basic instructions are to be found in the Alvis Register 12/50 Workshop Manual, though most 12/50s have a different double taper roller pinion bearing arrangement. Whilst you've got the axle in bits it's worth checking the bushes the halfshaft oil return scrolls run in. Posted by DeaneHarding 09/06/2018 10:18:31
