3 litre tyres

I fitted a set of 185 x 15 pirelli cinturatos on my TC21/100 last year and they are brilliant, so I contacted Longstone tyres about another set for the latest project but they say these tyres are currently unavailable with no new production date. I can get Michelins, Avons or Dunlops but I could do with some unbiased opinion as to which tyres are the best alternative to the Pirellis. I like to drive my Alvises 'with verve'! Andrew  my warm TA came with Michelin 185/70VR 15 XWX they are fantastic but expensive, the car has never put a foot wrong in 3 years wet or dry. I am currently running my TE on Vredestein Classic Sprint, they are ok and relatively inexpensive. in the past I have used Avons, terrrible,& Michelin XVS,pretty good. In all cases the size is/was 185 . Posted by Peter Martin 17/09/2012 09:10:15

My TD21 has just had a new set of Vredestein Classic Sprint from Longstone Tyres, which are very good and good value. if you want to consider others based on your driving style, the people at Longstone know their stuff and will advise accordingly. Posted by Philip 19/09/2012 09:17:50

I have done over 11,000 miles with my TE21 saloon on 185 Vredesteins and find them excellent. I used to run my TD on Dunlop ER/70/VR/15s years ago (the Jaguar XJ6 tyres), but they were forever needing balancing and were really too wide for the car. The Vredesteins seem to be surviving better. Thankyou everyone for your replies so far, I have just sent my wheels away for blasting and coating and they should be away for a couple of weeks which gives me time to decide on tyres. There are plenty of positive comments for the Vredesteins, a tyre that I will definitely be adding to my list of potentials. Posted by tf1695 20/09/2012 15:19:16

I use Hankook tyres which are less than half the price of all the others and just as good. Posted by Angus D'Arcy-Drake 21/09/2012 15:47:27

I also use Hankook tyres on my TA21 (WMD special), originally fitted for the previous owner by Earley Eng. and I have no complaints at all. Personally I would not have chosen them and I was sceptical at first, but they handle quite well, have a good profile in the body, wear well, and don't go out of balance. They can seem fairly heavy at low speed, and can make a bit of noise if pushed hard in corners. I generally run them at approx. 2.0 bar, depending on load in the car.  I thought about replacing them this year but having got used to them, they will stay on for a while yet.  They are not like Cinturatos or Michelins, but since they run well there are more important things to spend money on.  At a recent MOT (2nd with the same tester), the tester commented he and his colleagues are all using Hankooks and found good performance with no problems.  A recent offering for Hankook T rated 185 80 15's is North Hants Tyres at Aldershot (01252 318666), GBP 84-00 each incl. VAT and carriage.  Please will it stop raining before they start throwing salt down? Posted by lacey giles 21/09/2012 22:46:42

The latest offering of Dunlop 185 tyres are not much more than the Hankooks. Has anyone driven on them? Since I first saw them in June on mytyres.co.uk website described as Dunlop DOT2009 SP Sport D8 185 R15 91V Oldtimer they have since disappeared! Posted by AAT 22/09/2012 12:27:12
