Tacho/rev counter drive oil pressure

Has anyone else had any issues with the smiths rev cable drive from the end of the camshaft?  my problem is excessive oil in the drive. I cured the leak from the two steel blanking plugs, only then to get oil dripping from the cable. I then cured that with an O ring only to then spring an oil leak in the cab behind the clocks!  The drive seems ok and not excessive play but I am usure of the correct tollerences. It makes sense to have a little lubricant reaching the cable but not enough to drip on my shoes whilst driving!  My engine has just had a full rebuild and new cam bushes line board with 2-3 thou slack. Engine oil pressure good and not excessive so the drive is the likely culprit. I could easily seal the cable behind the dash too but I really want to solve the issue correctly.  It could be that it cures itself once run in. Posted by Hewitt OPC 21/09/2014 17:19:00

Chris  Not had the problem, hot oil in cockpit not good.  Looks like the oil seal at the end of the camshaft is leaking .The part no for TD/E's is C5511 so almost certainly the same for your TF, probably an engine out job ,bad luck  Peter Posted by Peter Martin 22/09/2014 09:04:01

Thank you Peter your diagnosis is unfortunately correct. Just home from work and with the fear etched in my mind from your responce, the spanners came out! A 110 degree endoscope gave me a close up view of the seal and confirms the issue.  Thankfully the fix isn't quite as drastic as engine out though, at very worst it is removal of the waterpump housing and i have just ordered the new seal at just over £10 plus p&p PHEW!! endoscope image of damaged seal   not sure how it got missed in the rebuild, complete gasket and seal kit fitted but obviously wasn't quite complete. Posted by Hewitt OPC 23/09/2014 08:33:15
