Are TD wire wheels compatible with TC and TA?

I am selling a set of 72 spoke wire wheels previously fitted to my TD21 Series1 1961.A prospective purchaser has queried whether they would be suitable for fitting to a TC or TA.Can anyone give me a definitive answer please? Mike Skinner 10089SE Posted by mikeskinner 06/10/2013 09:56:06

Hello Mike,  The earlier cars have 60 spoke wheels and if you fit later 72 spokers I am pretty sure you will find that the spokes foul the edge of the brake drum, preventing the wheel from being properly tightened and putting strain on the spokes.I will swap a couple of wheels tomorrow for a definitive answer.  Regards, Andrew Posted by tf1695 06/10/2013 20:11:28

They may appear to fit but will possibley bottom on the brake drum rather than sitting correctly on the taperd hub, thus causing fretting and  worn splines no matter how hard you bash the wheel nuts .I know because my TA suffers from this at the back ,(front ok as discs fitted). I don't think TA's had wires as oe. TC21/100  60 spoke wire wheels are part no C7385,I do not know the part no. for 60 spoke as fitted to S1 TD's  but early S2 cars,discs all round, could have 60 spokers ,part no C8251 & 72 spokers which  came in after chassis no 26953, are part no C10034.These are the wire wheels on TE's & TF's If you plan to drive the car with verve on our pot-holed roads ,72 spokers are much less prone to breakage so a good thing but more difficult to clean. You can get around the brake drum issue by having the drums machined so that the 72 spoke wheels don't foul them. If you are using new 72-spoke wheels I think you may also have to file down the outer edge of the wheel centre flange where it meets the drum, because the flange is marginally too wide for the recess on the drum.    And I agree...they are a pig to clean!
