Dealers Who sold Alvis, world wide?

Does anyone have any information on the dealer structure used by Alvis to sell new cars?  Did any dealers exist in the USA?  Was it possible to order directly from the factory, your new Alvis rolling chassis, ready for the body to be built? Alan Posted by alsfarms 13/02/2013 03:03:27

Alan,  The following are the five, circa 1950‘s & 1960’s, distributors I know of in North America.  Fergus Motors, 1717 Broadway, New York, NY  Cavalier Motor Cars, Ltd., 2956 Crenshaw Boulevard, Los Angeles, 16 CA & 9035 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, CA   British & Continental Motor Sales, Ltd., 6525 Decarie, Boulevard, Montreal, Quebec, Canada O’Donnell Mackie, Ltd., 945 Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada  O’Donnell Mackie, Ltd., 945 Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada  Plimley Motors, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada  As I understand it, Alvis did not have a dealer network here.  The cars that were shipped to North America in the 1950s were despatched to one of the above distributors who retailed the cars or wholesaled then to dealers who had an Alvis customer.  Wayne Posted by waynealvis 15/02/2013 16:21:06

Hello Wayne, I was hoping you would comment as I was sure you had more and better information on this subject.  I am trying to get my thoughts up on how the marketing       strategy worked to get the Alvis cars from the factory into the hands of buyers.  Would you suggest that a "Distributor" would take orders for a new Alvis from someone, who knew what an Alvis was, and that person simply take possession when it was delivered from the Distributor?  I would guess that the Distributor would be allow a percentage of the sale price to book the sale.  Would the marketing have been the same in the rest of the World?   I see many references to an Alvis being delivered to a Mr. So &So with no mention to a distributor or Dealer.  For another question, I would assume that each of the North American distributors would function as its own import agent to get his "New Ordered" Alvis from England and into the Western Hemisphere?  Wayne, records must exist that show how many NEW Alvis automobiles arrived in the Americas.  Do you know what that number is?  I also would guess that a goodly share, of the currently residing Alvis cars, are in the Americas due to private imports, after the car was NOT new anymore.  Is my thinking nearly correct.  I am having a pleasant time enjoying the Alvis for what it is, a very low production custom bodied car. Thanks Again, Alan Posted by alsfarms 15/02/2013 18:00:42
