Alan, The timing marks are on the crankshaft pulley, if you shine a torch down between the radiator and the nearside of the engine you should see a pointed or conical nut fastening the engine block cover plate. This is the 'pointer' you set the timing marks to. Use the starting handle to slowly turn the engine over and you should see the marks on the pulley come around, clean them up and put a dab of paint in them so that they show up under the strobe light.
