Flywheel timing marks

Alan,  The timing marks are on the crankshaft pulley, if you shine a torch down between the radiator and the nearside of the engine you should see a pointed or conical nut fastening the engine block cover plate. This is the 'pointer' you set the timing marks to. Use the starting handle to slowly turn the engine over and you should see the marks on the pulley come around, clean them up and put a dab of paint in them so that they show up under the strobe light.  Andrew Posted by tf1695 01/06/2016 16:43:11

Alan  If  a TE is the same as a TD there is a hole at the top of the bellhousing and you can see the the flywheel .The hand book claims there is a yellow painted line marking TDC for nos 1 &6 and  marks for 5* increments/decrements.There is a corresponding  yellow line on the crankcase rear cover.However that is  all irrelevant if someone has removed and refitted the flywheel one or more pitches out to get less chewed up starter ring teeth and /or the paint has disappeared. Much easier ,assuming you still have the original harmonic damper   attached correctly to the front pulley the timing marks are there also.The fixed pointer is at one o' clock as you look  at the front of the engine. If the outer ring has fallen off the damper bad luck, no marks, and even worse luck if it has then been stuck back on  in the incorrect position. At which point you resort to a piece of wire in no1 plug hole,I have a feeling CP does replacement pulleys correctly marked as no doubt do RT.  Good luck  Peter Posted by Peter Martin 01/06/2016 18:02:55
