Sat 16th-Sun 17th South West: South West Alvis Day
The South West section Alvis Weekend is being held in historic Buckfastleigh adjacent to the wilds of Dartmoor. Accommodation is at the Northgate Hotel owned by the Abbey. The hotel has recently been upgraded and modernised with a new kitchen and wider menu. There are parking facilities in a field at the rear for trailers.
We plan a visit to the hugely impressive Abbey on Saturday morning followed by a stroll over to the local classic car storage and workshop facility which has offered to put on coffee for us. We can then stroll back to the Abbey restaurant which has a very acceptable range of light lunches. Following lunch we have planned a motor car run over the moor taking in interesting roads, views and places of interest to stop.
Those that don’t wish to drive our route have many other options, this being such a scenic area. If you only want to walk a few yards you can visit the monastic way exhibition which is a little gem of a modern interactive museum setting out the history of the Abbey which was only completed just over a hundred years ago. Alternatively one could take a trip on the steam railway to Totnes.
SWAD itself takes place on a field owned by and adjoining the South Devon Steam Railway. Attendees are entitled to 10% off the price of a rail ticket and there is a discount for those over 66 too. It is a very atmospheric setting with the steam trains departing and arriving at the station a few yards from our display. There is a model railway shop, a cafe, a little railway museum which is free, plus a butterfly and otter park within easy walking distance. Attendees can obtain a 10% discount off food and drink purchased in the railway owned kiosk (not the cafe) situated in the public car park.
We do hope you can join in this super weekend.

This will be held next to the hotel, which should prove convenient for members staying for the weekend. The ‘Sunday Section Day’ will be held in the grounds of Cyfarthfa Castle, located north of the historic mining town of Merthyr. This castellated mansion is a Grade 11 listed building, situated in 160 acres of parkland. It was commissioned by ironmaster William Crawshay 11(1788-1867) in 1825. He was known as ‘The Iron King’. It was built at a cost of £30,000 using locally quarried stone. The museum and the art gallery will be open. The gardens remain open for the public. The castle was sold in 1908 to the local council for £18,500 including the surrounding park of around 600 acres. www.cyfarthfa.co.uk
